A Day Full of Memories and Memorials, part II

From the Amsterdamer Strasse I continued to the Soviet Memorial in Schönholzer Heide, another memorial for the Soviet soldiers who fought and fell in the war against Nazi Germany. Even though today we know quite a lot about the crimes of the Soviet leadership and also of some of the Soviet soldiers, I still find the often bombastic Soviet monuments extraordinary and somehow moving.

One project finished - A Practical Guide to Memorials of Persecution and Resistance in and around Berlin

 The first (though secondary) of the two projects that I worked on during my time in Berlin has been finished successfully. It is a practical guide for anybody who is in Berlin and wants to visit one or more of the 69 memorials and museums that appear in the guide. It includes a useful guide with a basic description, links to a website (for most sites) and the location in Google maps, plus information about opening hours etc. where relevant. The guide is called 'To Warn and Remember' and you can find it here . My cooperative project with House of One is in an advanced stage. I'm waiting for feedback and input from my Berlin colleagues, as soon as I have that (before the end of the month, I assume) I will finish, publish, and share the learning units based on 'The Man in the Clouds' .

Meeting friends and colleagues

Today, Stefanie Avital of the German Desk at my school, the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, Israel, and I had the chance to meet Greta and Maja of the Netzwerk Israel , which - supported by the EVZ Foundation - gives me a scholarship to stay and work here in Berlin for over two weeks. As soon as I heard from Greta that I had received the scholarship, I contacted her to make an appointment. As with my colleagues from House of One, I wanted to meet Greta and Maja in person, so that future communication and cooperation would be easier and more effective. I wanted Stefanie, who lives in Berlin, to join me, because I thought it important for her to learn about the work of the Netzwerk and for them to know more about what we do at Leo Baeck. And all that is exactly what happened. It was a really good meeting, everybody learnt something, I think. That's All, Folks! For Now.

A fitting finishing touch to two and a half wonderful weeks: a(nother) guided tour of the Bundestag/Reichstag. Always interesting. After I get home tomorrow, and once I get settled again, I'll write a reflection. Or several reflections. I'll need some time to digest everything, after two weeks of work in the Netherlands, and two and a half weeks in Berlin.
